Spotlight on Christy Sicher

Christy Sicher
Christy Sicher is currently a senior Sociology/ Anthropology and Black World Studies double major. She comes from the Bay Area in California. She has been an active participant in many groups on campus including Sisters United (serving as member and President), the Student Union on Black Awareness (serving as member, Vice President), Social-Cultural Chair, and Executive Secretary, OWU Gospel Lyrics/ Sounds of Blackness, Ohio Wesleyan Prison Mission Team (serving as the spiritual guide); Ohio Wesleyan Ghana Cultural Immersion Mission Team (serving as team leader). Christy is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Last Fall, Christy interned with the City of Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services. Among her many tasks, she engaged in discussions with various city departments, including the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Public Schools and Mayoral departments in order to create best practices for social welfare and municipal/community based organizations. As she writes, “My experience in the Chicago Center Program reaffirmed my passion to work in the social justice field as a lawyer.” Upon graduating from OWU, Christy plans to return to Chicago in pursuit of a Juris Doctorate in Family/ Child Law. We are proud of Christy’s many accomplishments and we wish her success in all her many endeavors.

Spotlight on McCarton Ackerman

McCarton Ackerman
McCarton Ackerman is a Junior from Stamford, Connecticut, double majoring in Black World Studies and English. He serves on the student board for the Black World Studies department, writes articles for the Transcript, and DJ's for the campus radio station. He also formerly ran PRIDE and played on the Ohio Wesleyan Men's tennis team. Currently, McCarton works with an online tutoring company called Tutor.com. This company works primarily with inner-city students and assists them with homework assignments and research projects via the Internet. He ends up saving much of the money made from this job in order to fund traveling excursions. In the last eighteen months, McCarton has traveled through South America, Canada, and Ireland. He is hoping to travel through Western Africa next to visit Ghana and Senegal. After college, he plans on taking a few years to teach English to non-native speakers throughout Europe and Australia. McCarton hopes to ultimately go into journalism and become an on-air reporter.
